How to Learn Captive Insurance Without a Designation

The ACI is the industry's designation, but not the only way in. A factual comparison of the routes to working knowledge of captives.

The short answer: you do not need a designation to understand captives well enough to make decisions about one. The main routes are ICCIE's ACI designation or shorter CCI certificate, single ICCIE courses, short courses from IRMI and The Institutes, industry conferences, and self-paced written curricula. Choose by whether you need a credential or working knowledge.

If you need a credential

If captives are, or will be, your profession — as a captive manager, regulator, broker, fronting-carrier specialist or service provider — the ACI is the designation the industry recognises. Its weight comes from its demands: seven core courses spanning risk financing, reinsurance, actuarial science, investments, ethics and captive formation, two electives, and closed-book exams. ICCIE courses are not offered in a self-paced format, so plan around a weekly 75-minute session at noon Eastern time for each course. The CCI is a shorter commitment with a defined track for captive owners, and courses taken for it count toward the ACI later.

If you need working knowledge

A CFO evaluating a feasibility study, a risk manager inheriting a captive, or a director joining a captive board usually needs something different: enough command of the mechanics to ask the right questions, judge the answers and sign off with confidence. Several routes fit that need.

Single courses. One ICCIE course — Forming and Operating a Captive, or the Captive Board Governance elective for directors — gives instructor-led depth on a defined topic without committing to a programme.

Short self-study courses. The IRMI courses offered through Captive.com and WebCE (Designing & Managing a Captive, Captives as Risk Retention Mechanisms, Captives as Risk Transfer Mechanisms, Property and Casualty Reinsurance Fundamentals) and The Institutes' Captive Insurance Fundamentals are low-cost introductions. The IRMI courses carry CE or CPE credit where approved — Captives as Risk Retention Mechanisms, for example, is five hours of self-study with an online exam.

Conferences. Domicile and national association conferences are the best place to hear how regulators and practitioners are thinking now. They are better for currency than for a structured grounding.

Self-paced curricula. Written programmes organised by module and by role suit readers who want to work through the whole subject — formation, financial mechanics, capital, regulation, tax, claims, restructuring and exit — at their own speed, and return to it as a reference.

Choosing

Start with the decision you face. A credential is worth its cost when your career depends on being recognised as a captive professional. When the need is to govern, fund or evaluate a captive well, a credential may matter less than depth on the right topics — and the routes above can be combined.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the ACI designation to work with captives?

No. The ACI is a voluntary professional designation, not a licence. It is widely recognised in the industry and is a strong signal for people building a captive career, but captive owners, CFOs and directors do not need it to do their jobs.

What are the alternatives to the ACI?

ICCIE's own CCI certificate and single ICCIE courses, IRMI's self-study courses through Captive.com and WebCE, The Institutes' Captive Insurance Fundamentals course, industry conferences, and self-paced written curricula.

Can ICCIE courses be taken self-paced?

No. ICCIE states that its core and elective courses cannot be completed in an independent study or self-paced format; each runs on a schedule with weekly 75-minute web conferences.

What is the best way for a CFO to learn about captive insurance?

Focus on the decisions a CFO owns: the feasibility case, capital and collateral, premium and tax treatment, and reporting. A short course or self-paced curriculum covering those topics is usually a better fit than a full designation.

Is there captive insurance training for board directors?

Yes. ICCIE offers a Captive Board Governance elective and a CCI track for captive owners, and some self-paced curricula include a dedicated learning path for board members and directors.
